In June of 2004, with financial assistance from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI) established its Drug Prosecution and Prevention Program (DP³). This program was borne out of the need to educate and support prosecutors who are battling drug related gun violence. The program will not only support the national Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) activities designed to reduce gun violence, but will also render technical assistance and training to prosecutors engaged in the prosecution and prevention of illegal drugs.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Drug Prosecution and Prevention Program (DP³) is to enhance the knowledge and skills of America’s state and local prosecutors who handle the majority of illegal drug cases that enter the criminal justice system.

National Meth Awareness Day 2006National Methamphetamine Awareness Day
November 30th was designated as “National Methamphetamine Awareness Day” by the United States Department of Justice. This date serves as the beginning of a coordinated effort by federal, state and local law enforcement to reduce the demand for methamphetamine as all levels of law enforcement continue to work on reducing the supply of this devastating drug.

At the local level, the Department has asked that all local prosecutors participate in community outreach by delivering their methamphetamine educational presentations in schools; community centers; civic organization meetings; and in other similar venues on November 30th. The initiative is designed so that leaders in the legal community and law enforcement are delivering the important message about the dangers of methamphetamine on the same date nationwide.

Presentation materials and other information can be accessed at the DOJ Website at www.usdoj.gov/methawareness.

Drug Prosecution Across the Nation: A State-by-State Map of Information

Recently, APRI’s Office of Research and Evaluation (OR & E) distributed a survey to all state and local prosecutors’ offices in the nation, asking them questions about their perceptions of the drug problem, including drug-related crime, in their communities. Five hundred and fifty-two prosecutors’ offices returned the survey. OR & E has analyzed the results of the survey, and has compiled them in a soon-to-be-published monograph entitled Drug Prosecution Across the Nation: Prosecutors’ Perceptions of the Drug Problem and Drug-Related Crime in their Communities.

The data from the survey is broken down by state. For each state, you can view statistics about whether the responding prosecutors' offices have initiated, participated in, or led programs concerning: diversion alternatives to incarceration; drug courts; law enforcement drug task forces; multi-disciplinary partnerships and coalitions of agencies; community–based public safety and community prosecution; faith-based prevention and intervention; general prevention and intervention; and nuisance abatement and eviction.

Technical Assistance
The DP³ staff is available to provide technical assistance to drug prosecutors in the form of telephone, facsimile and e-mail support. Information on drug crime is gathered and organized so it can be accessed easily and incorporated into its training and technical assistance. APRI also continues to build its database of prosecutors and other allied professionals involved in illegal drug reduction initiatives.
