Assistant Attorney General

Location: Medicaid Fraud Control Division, Washington State Attorney General's Office- Olympia

The Medicaid Fraud Control Division (MFCD) of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office seeks to fill a new assistant attorney general (AAG) position in Olympia to investigate, prosecute and litigate Medicaid provider fraud as well as abuse and neglect of persons in residential facilities using a full array of civil and criminal remedies.  The Medicaid Fraud Control Division (MFCD) headquarters is in Olympia, Washington with employees also located at the AGO’s Spokane and Seattle Offices. The Unit currently has a staff of 42 individuals, including attorneys, analysts, investigators, and professional support staff. The federally funded and mandated MFCD is dedicated to the mission of deterring provider fraud as well as abuse and neglect in residential facilities.  All AAGs in MFCD manage a robust caseload, including directing investigations, assessing evidence, and resolving cases through litigation or negotiation. MFCD is unique in that cases have an attorney, investigator and forensic fraud examiner/analyst assigned who work the matter from allegation through litigation. In MFCD, attorneys build their cases with their investigator and forensic analyst from the ground up. The position is statewide, allowing the attorney the opportunity to practice in many different courts at the county level. This AAG will carry a full caseload primarily comprised of complex criminal and some civil matters. Attorneys must work with a sense of urgency and take the initiative to keep their cases moving toward resolution. The successful candidate for this position will be highly motivated and have a strong desire to enforce the law and the demonstrated ability to work with a team.  MFCD is unique in that it involves protecting not only the Medicaid program of roughly 13 billion dollars per annum, but also its most vulnerable persons, typically elderly nursing home patients. In many of our cases there is no precedent so MFCD cases are consistently on the cutting edge of national legal theories and issues. The cases range from single provider home health fraud, abuse and neglect of persons in nursing homes, large scale organized individual and corporate fraudulent activity to national whistleblower actions. Our staff is a highly professional, fun and seasoned analytical investigative team. This, and the great people who make up the unit, gives MFCD a particularly terrific team atmosphere.  This position also has the opportunity to collaborate with the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Control Units through working on national cases, specialized training and an unparalleled investigative and litigation support network. MFCD AAGs routinely bring cases in state court and investigate the same with our federal counterparts in particular, HHS-OIG, FBI, Customs, as well as local law enforcement and state administrative agencies. If you enjoy working in a team setting, complex puzzle solving and being on the cutting edge of law, this is the place.
