Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti is seeking a full-time, limited duration Conviction Review Attorney to dedicate a year to investigating convictions obtained by the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney that may have been based on questionable testimony and/or evidence.

Salary is $97,052 but negotiable based on experience.  Flexibility provided for teleworking in addition to VRS, medical/dental, and other benefits.

Conviction review is a specialized process that involves the following specific duties:

• Identifying and defining the involvement of the former policy officers in the casework and the conviction of defendants prosecuted by the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney;
• Conducting a thorough review of files, records, evidence, and testimony in these cases;
• Determining acts and sources of any intentional or unintentional wrongdoing in the development and prosecution of these cases;
• Testing the validity of evidence (e.g., analyzing chains of custody); and
• Performing other tasks that may be assigned as needed to complete the post-conviction review process.

The ideal candidate has a JD from an accredited college of university and at least three years’ experience in the legal field or other law enforcement filed, preferably with knowledge of and experience in criminal law and procedure.

Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

• Experience in the practice of Virginia criminal law;
• Experience with post-conviction review work; and
• Extensive knowledge of Virginia law enforcement or courtroom experience including trial, legal research, and clerk experience.

Successful completion of a background check is required.  This is an at-will position that serves at the pleasure of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.
